Looking at a map of the U.S., it is obvious where the so-called, "Square States" are located: Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico> you know the ones. Here's another to consider> have you ever looked at the trunk lid of a '61 Ford Galaxie Sunliner convertible? Huge hardly says it. That giant rectangular expanse is so big that you could make a strong case that it could apply for statehood on its own! you know the ones. Here's another to consider> have you ever looked at the trunk lid of a '61 Ford Galaxie Sunliner convertible? Huge hardly says it. That giant rectangular expanse is so big that you could make a strong case that it could apply for statehood on its own! have you ever looked at the trunk lid of a '61 Ford Galaxie Sunliner convertible? Huge hardly says it. That giant rectangular expanse is so big that you could make a strong case that it could apply for statehood on its own! Sitting behind the big door at Benchmark Classics, America's Hot Rod, Custom, Specialty and Muscle Car Playground in Middleton, Wisconsin is a great version of this fabulous Ford icon, a car whose time has finally arrived 50 years after it came off the line. The '61 Ford Galaxie Sunliner is suddenly a car that collectors are recognizing as one of the Blue Oval's best, perhaps the first models of the decade that left behind all the rococo styling of the 50's and presented a new design language of grace and relative simplicity. And, of course, hugeness. Benchmark's Sunliner starts with really good black paint. We all know how a black paint job will highlight a body's flaws. Check out this body and you'll find much to admire. From the massive grill (everything on this car is massive!) to the brilliant chrome wheel skirts that lead to satin-finish stainless steel rear quarter shields, there's just so much to take in! A good, good body. The excellent white convertible top is in outstanding condition. It comes with a black tonneau cover, because why in the world would you EVER actually put the top UP on this fabulous ride?! Our 1961 Sunliner has a great red and white vinyl interior, featuring a big red steering wheel and red carpets. The trunk is as clean as can be and is so huge that you might need a surveyor to correctly figure the dimensions. That huge trunk lid is being put to very good use! Some of the chrome is very good, and some of it is not perfect. However, much of it is very good and, importantly, it is all there. The Benchmark Sunliner comes with the very common (and pretty darned bullet-proof) combination of a Cruise-O-Matic auto tranny and a 390 V-8. It runs like a champ. With only a very believable 60,996 miles showing, this really is a low-mileage beauty. It is a great piece of Americana, one of the best-looking Fords of its day. It would be hard to imagine a better ride for a cruise on a pretty day. And with those loooong bench seats, there's room for ALL your friends. You can meet this hunka, hunka burnin' love at Benchmark Classics, just off the West Beltline on University Avenue, Highway 14 in Middleton, Wisconsin. For Ford fans, this'll definitely get your motor runnin'!
